This feels like a show that is unquestionably written by people who know Star Trek and love it but are able to have fun with it and talk about the kind of things people who have watched however many hundreds of episode of Star Trek would talk about - like the worryingly high possibility of horrifying bodily mutation or frequency with which bridge crew come back from the dead or the seemingly endless number of explanations for a crew member to start acting weird. Which brings us - finally - to the Lower Decks. Part of me feels that everyone just wanted to avoid dealing with the fallout of the Dominion war for some reason because we got thrown into the Delta quadrant, sent back to pre-Federation days, did an alternate timeline, went back before Kirk and then went ahead sometime after "All Good Things.", all of which conveniently circumvented any need to talk about that whole kerfuffle. So we lurched from the diminishing returns of same ol', same ol' to something that clearly wasn't made by people with any real understanding - nevermind interest - in Star Trek as it used to be. Star Trek was also in serious need of something to turn around its commercial fortunes and whatever you think of JJ, you can't argue that he achieved that. I know some people are into it - that's fine, we all like different things and I don't begrudge anyone enjoyment of something I personally dislike. The JJ/Kurtzman era had - until Lower Decks - felt like some generic science fiction product that accidentally got stuck with a Star Trek label (not Star Trek (2016), that was JJ's best Star Wars film to date).
Wondering where you should start? Upcoming Episodes:Ĭlick here for our archive of discussion threads DateĪnd I won't get into Voyager bashing or Enterprise bashing or JJ bashing or Discovery or Picard bashing because those shows and films all have some merit to them (except Picard) but with Voyager and Enterprise, there was the looming shadow of Rick Berman and such a huge carry over of production staff that the fact Voyager and Enterprise (at least the first two seasons) were really just carrying on from season 7 TNG, which was already running low on ideas.
